Rows and columns mixed up

In the character, it claims the Navigator adds 10 to the ships in its "column", but apparently the right word is "row". In the pre-battle ship placement screen, the element the nav. adds to is the horizontal one, the ROW. No one would think the horizontal element is a "column", "column" ALWAYS refers to a VERTICAL element. Please make this clearer in the language of the rules.

You mean it's a row for me and a column for the fleet. Either way how is it "the point" to say the opposite of what you intended?

Uh, are you denying the language is confusing, or merely being difficult? Much better would be to say (or clarify) that "column" refers to the ships in front of or behind

basically just like a tank column or a roman army column
when you see an army marching with every squad walking one behind another, it is called a column, not a row
however from what side(from the front the back or the side) you look at it, it is a column
a column is a column a row is a row

there is nothing to make clearer if you ever watched an historical movie with an army marching, it would be called a column
or if you played a strategy game too
there is actually lot of other game, specially the type like plants vs zombie or march of war face off, it will be exactly the same, column will be what look like horizontal to you and row will be vertical.
it's an army formation term, the end.

So, to make it simple, does it means from Left to right is colums & from up to down is row here in this game? please advice, thanks.

On your screen, top to bottom is a row.

If the buff says row then the ships in front of or behind will get the buff regardless of how the orientation of your screen is or how you look at your ships. If the buff says column then the ships directly to the left and right of that ship will get the buff

The front of a column of ships is the bow or front of first ship in the column.
The rear of a column of ships is the stern or back of last ship in the column.
This is for your Battle fleet:
Actual column in game formation therefore starts in East and goes West. It's direction of travel is left to right.
A row of ships is when ships travel side to side. In other words North to South or South to North. In other words, top to bottom or bottom to top.
For the enemy Battle fleet:
The column is reversed.
The row is same.
