Yes, the devs have long practiced increasingly devious ways to bankrupt players both in game and out of game.

I think I'll be removing protection in between every fort run this week.

I hope this was intended to be sarcastic.

Some people need to be protected from their own ineptitude, or so "events" (perhaps permanent soon?) like this appear to indicate.
